Available downloads

Every file below is published on the release repository. Check the SHA-256 digest after downloading.

Installer (.pkg)

Velopack setup. Apple Silicon and Intel are separate downloads.

Portable (.zip)

Unzip and run. No installer, and nothing written outside the folder.

macOS will refuse to open it the first time

A dialog says Apple could not verify the file is free of malware, and offers exactly two buttons: “Move to Trash” and “Done”. Neither opens the installer, and that is the dialog working as designed — there is no bypass inside it.

  1. 1Click “Done” to dismiss the dialog. Do not click “Move to Trash”, which deletes the download.
  2. 2Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and scroll down to the Security section.
  3. 3Click “Open Anyway” next to the message about the installer, then confirm with your password. This is Apple’s documented override, and it covers installers as well as apps.
  4. 4Open the .pkg again. It runs, and macOS remembers the exception from then on.

If no “Open Anyway” button is there, macOS may not have registered the attempt yet — try to open the .pkg once more and check Privacy & Security straight afterwards. The Security page covers what to do if it still does not appear. If you already use Homebrew, the cask above installs this same package without this dialog.

Install with Homebrew instead

Third-party tap

The same .pkg, downloaded by Homebrew from the release repository. It picks Apple Silicon or Intel for you, and verifies the SHA-256 pinned in the cask before installing.

$ brew tap pvdownloader/tap$ brew trust pvdownloader/tap$ brew install --cask pvdownloader

brew trust is new, so run brew update first if Homebrew reports it as an unknown command. The tap is ours but not a core Homebrew tap, which is why it has to be trusted once before its cask will load. The cask pins one exact version and its SHA-256; because pvdownloader updates itself in the background afterwards, let the app handle upgrades rather than reinstalling it with brew.

Installation

  1. 1Download the .pkg for your Mac above — Apple Silicon and Intel are separate files.
  2. 2Open the .pkg. macOS blocks it the first time; see the box above for the way past.
  3. 3Verify the install with the SHA-256 digest if you want to be certain of the file.
  4. 4Install yt-dlp or FFmpeg if you need them, or let pvdownloader fetch them for you.
