The thinnest extractor of the popular sites
Instagram is the weakest of the well-known platforms in yt-dlp's list, and it is worth saying so directly. Three extractors, one of them flagged broken, against fifteen for YouTube. That reflects how much of Instagram sits behind a login rather than anything about the platform's size — and yt-dlp does not sign in.
The practical consequence is that you should read the table above before pasting a link. If what you have is a profile URL, the honest answer today is that it does not work, and no setting on this end changes that. Post, story and hashtag URLs are the shapes the engine currently lists.
Everything else about the page still holds: the engine is optional, nothing ships inside the installer, and a fix for a broken Instagram extractor arrives from yt-dlp's maintainers as and when they get to it. Because the engine updates independently of the application, that fix does not wait for a pvdownloader release.
