Dailymotion still hosts a lot of video that never made it anywhere else, and pvdownloader talks to it directly. There is no engine to fetch first and no account to create. Paste a link, choose a rendition, and the file lands on your disk.
This guide is the walkthrough. The shorter reference — capabilities, geo-restrictions and the FAQ — is the Dailymotion video downloader page.
What you need
Nothing beyond the app itself. Dailymotion is a native provider, so a plain video download does not need yt-dlp or FFmpeg.
Two optional extras are worth knowing about, even though this platform does not require them:
- FFmpeg — not needed to save the video, and not needed for subtitles either. It only comes into it if you later convert audio to MP3 or FLAC on a clip that offers that option.
- yt-dlp — not needed for Dailymotion. It is for the 1,000+ sites that are not natively supported.
pvdownloader asks before it fetches either one. Neither is bundled with the installer.
Step 1 — Copy the video link
Open the video on Dailymotion and copy the URL from the address bar.
You do not have to hunt for a “special” download URL. These all resolve to the same video:
- the watch page you are looking at
- a short
dai.lylink - an embed or player link
If someone sent you a dai.ly short link, paste that. There is no extra expansion step.
Step 2 — Paste it into pvdownloader
Drop the link into the URL field. The app reads the video’s metadata — title, duration and uploader — along with the list of renditions Dailymotion is actually serving, and shows you those before anything is written to disk.
That list is the point. It is not a fixed menu of 360p / 720p / 1080p that every clip pretends to have.
Step 3 — Choose a quality and download
Dailymotion delivers most of its catalogue over HLS rather than as a single MP4 file. pvdownloader reads the quality ladder the player itself would use and lists the individual variants. Where a video still has a progressive MP4, that is offered as well.
| What you see | When to pick it |
|---|---|
| Progressive MP4 | The simple case, when Dailymotion still exposes a plain file. No segment reassembly. |
| HLS variants | What most modern clips use. Pick the rung that matches the quality you actually want. |
| A shorter list than you expected | The video was not uploaded in that quality. A 720p source has no 1080p version to offer. |
Whichever you pick, the stream is saved as Dailymotion serves it. Nothing is re-encoded on the way out, so there is no generation loss and no quality you did not ask for.
Playlists, channels, and geo-blocks
Three limits are worth knowing before you paste something and wonder why nothing happened.
- Single videos only. Playlists and channel pages are not supported yet. Pasting a playlist or user URL will not queue a batch — each video currently needs its own link. That is a known gap, not a setting you have missed.
- Regional restrictions. If Dailymotion refuses to serve a video to your connection, pvdownloader sees exactly the same refusal. It downloads what you can already watch. It does not route around geo-blocks or pretend to be somewhere else.
- Private videos. Those need the same access you would need in a browser. The app does not sign in to Dailymotion and does not bypass whoever set the lock.
Because the provider is built into the application, a platform change on Dailymotion’s side arrives as a normal app update rather than a component you have to fetch and keep current yourself.
Subtitles
When Dailymotion exposes a caption track, it is downloaded as a separate file rather than burned into the picture. That step does not need FFmpeg.
If you do not ask for subtitles, you do not get them. They are opt-in per download.
A note on copyright
pvdownloader is a tool, and it does not decide what you are allowed to do with the result. Downloading a video does not grant you a licence to it.
A few situations where this is worth being careful:
- Your own uploads — no issue, and this is the single best way to keep a copy of work you have published.
- Creative Commons material — check the specific licence, because many CC variants still require attribution.
- Anything else — you need the rights holder’s permission, or a legal exception that applies where you live.
The app does not strip DRM, does not bypass paywalls or geo-blocks, and cannot download content that the platform refuses to serve you.
