Most of Imgur is still images. When a post is a video — or an animated post stored as one — pvdownloader saves the MP4 Imgur actually holds, not the GIF its API likes to report. Support is native, so there is nothing to install first.
This guide covers the URL shapes that work, why the file comes down as MP4, and the galleries that are refused on purpose. A shorter reference, including the FAQ, is the Imgur video downloader page.
What you need
Nothing beyond the app itself. Imgur is a native provider. No account, no engine, no conversion step.
Two optional extras exist in the app, and this platform needs neither of them:
- FFmpeg — Imgur serves plain progressive MP4 files, so nothing needs reassembling or converting.
- yt-dlp — not needed for Imgur. It is for the 1,000+ sites that are not natively supported.
pvdownloader asks before it fetches either one. Neither is bundled with the installer.
Step 1 — Copy the post link
Copy the URL from the post’s page, or a direct i.imgur.com link ending in .mp4, .webm or .gifv. Both shapes are recognised.
A gallery or album link works too, if it contains exactly one video. That restriction is covered below rather than discovered after the paste.
Step 2 — Paste it into pvdownloader
Drop the link into the URL field. The app resolves the post and shows you its title, author and the file on offer before anything is written to disk.
Imgur links are recognised as Imgur links rather than treated as anonymous direct URLs. That is why a post gives you its title and author instead of a nameless file named after whatever the address happened to end in.
If you pasted a gallery link, the video inside it is resolved first — or the app tells you the gallery is not a single video, which is the honest result.
Step 3 — Download
There is one file per post, so there is no quality ladder to choose from. The MP4 is saved as-is. Nothing is re-encoded.
That is the whole job. Imgur is less a video platform than an image host that happens to carry video, and the download looks like it: one file, one click, done.
GIFV is a video file wearing a different name
Imgur’s animated posts are videos. A gifv post is stored as an MP4, and pvdownloader goes for that file rather than the .gif that Imgur’s API often reports.
Two practical consequences:
- The download is smaller than a GIF of the same animation would be.
- There is no conversion step, so there is no quality lost to one.
If you were expecting a .gif on disk, you will get an .mp4 instead. That is the format the post was actually saved in.
Galleries, still images, and where Imgur stops
A single post is easy. A gallery is a container. pvdownloader reads it, and if exactly one video sits inside, that video is resolved and downloaded.
Galleries holding several videos are reported as unsupported rather than half-working. There is no batch UI, so picking one on your behalf would just be a surprise — open the post you want and paste its own link.
The other common failure is simpler: the post is not a video at all. Most of Imgur is still images, and there is nothing for a video downloader to fetch. The app says so rather than inventing a file.
A note on copyright
pvdownloader is a tool, and it does not decide what you are allowed to do with the result. Downloading a post does not grant you a licence to it.
A few situations where this is worth being careful:
- Your own uploads — no issue, and this is the single best way to keep a copy of work you have published.
- Creative Commons material — check the specific licence, because many CC variants still require attribution.
- Anything else — you need the rights holder’s permission, or a legal exception that applies where you live.
The app does not strip DRM, does not bypass paywalls, and cannot download content that the platform refuses to serve you.
