TikTok Video Downloader
TikTok is not built into pvdownloader. Support comes from yt-dlp, the optional engine the app offers to fetch with one click, so nothing on this page applies until that is installed.
TikTok is also the clearest argument for reading the table below before pasting a link. yt-dlp lists six extractors for it and marks three of them as currently broken, so half of the URL shapes you might reasonably try are not expected to work today.
This platform is not built in
TikTok works through yt-dlp, a separate open-source downloader. On first run pvdownloader explains this and offers a one-click download from the official source — nothing is bundled with the installer, and if you already have yt-dlp it uses your own copy instead. Without it, the app installs and runs fine; you simply do not get TikTok.
What the engine covers on TikTok
User pages
The extractor for user pages is listed without a broken marker, so a profile URL is one of the shapes to use.
Collections
Collections have their own extractor and are not flagged as broken either.
Live streams
There is a dedicated extractor for live streams, and it carries no broken marker. That is not universal — live video is refused outright on some other platforms.
No re-encoding
The stream is saved as it is served, with no transcoding pass over it.
How to download from TikTok
- 1
Add the yt-dlp engine
pvdownloader asks on first run and fetches yt-dlp from its official source with one click. If you already have yt-dlp installed, the app detects and uses your own copy rather than downloading another.
- 2
Paste a link that matches a working extractor
User pages, collections and live streams are the three shapes not flagged as broken. The table above is the list to check against, and it is refreshed from upstream on every build.
- 3
Choose a format and download
Pick from the formats the engine reports and start the job. The file is saved as served rather than re-encoded.
What yt-dlp supports for TikTok
These are the URL shapes yt-dlp's own documentation lists for this site. The status column is upstream's assessment of its own extractors, copied as-is and refreshed on every build — a broken row means yt-dlp says it is broken, not us.
| URL shape | Status |
|---|---|
collection | Supported |
effect | Broken upstream |
live | Supported |
sound | Broken upstream |
tag | Broken upstream |
user | Supported |
Three of the six are broken, and why that is worth knowing
Sounds, tags and effects are the three yt-dlp marks as currently broken for TikTok. User pages, collections and live streams are not. That split is the most useful thing on this page, because it is the difference between a link that resolves and one that fails for reasons no setting can fix.
The markers are upstream's own, not ours, and they change without us touching anything — the list is re-fetched from yt-dlp on every build. A row marked broken today can start working next month, and a working row can break. Treat the table as a snapshot rather than a promise.
As on every page in this tier, the fix for a broken extractor comes from yt-dlp's maintainers rather than an application update. That is exactly why the optional components update independently: when TikTok changes something, you update the engine, and you are not waiting on a new release of this app.
