Copy the post link
Copy the URL of the post from your browser's address bar. Reddit's anonymous API refuses some first requests outright, so a link that fails once is worth trying again a moment later.

Hosted video only, and why the stream choice matters
The most useful thing to know about Reddit support is its boundary. pvdownloader downloads video Reddit hosts itself, on v.redd.it. A post that links out to YouTube, Imgur or anywhere else is not downloadable here, and the app says so rather than pretending to resolve it. The limit is deliberate: following an external link would mean quietly downloading from another platform under the wrong provider, which is how you end up with a file that is not what the page promised.
The second is the audio, and it catches people out. Reddit serves hosted video in two forms: an HLS stream that carries sound, and a plain MP4 that frequently does not — it is usually a video-only fragment. pvdownloader prefers the HLS stream whenever both are available, which is the difference between a working download and a silent file that looks like a bug. If you end up with a video and no sound, that is what happened, and it is worth reporting rather than assuming you did something wrong.
Two things fall outside the scope entirely. Quarantine and private subreddits need an account to read at all, and pvdownloader does not sign in to anything. And Reddit's anonymous API refuses some requests outright, which is why a first attempt can fail on a link that works perfectly a moment later — in a few regions it will not succeed without a proxy at all.
