Instagram is the weakest of the household names yt-dlp covers, and it is worth saying that before you paste a profile URL. Support is not built into pvdownloader. It arrives with the optional engine, and even then a profile page is marked broken upstream.
This guide is the walkthrough. The live extractor table is on the Instagram video downloader page. It is refreshed from yt-dlp on every build, so a marker that is broken today can move, and a working row can break.
What you need
pvdownloader, plus yt-dlp. Without the engine, an Instagram link has nothing to resolve it.
On first run the app offers to fetch yt-dlp from its official source with one click. Nothing is bundled with the installer. If you already have yt-dlp, the app uses your copy.
- yt-dlp — required. Instagram is not a native provider.
- FFmpeg — only if the format you pick needs merging or converting. The app tells you at that point rather than asking up front.
pvdownloader asks before it fetches either one.
Step 1 — Add the yt-dlp engine
Same one-click step as on any other site that is not built in. Skip it and Instagram stays out of reach; the rest of the app still runs.
Step 2 — Paste a post or story link
Copy the URL from the post or story you can already open in a browser. Those are the shapes yt-dlp currently lists as working, along with hashtag pages.
A profile URL is the one not to try. yt-dlp marks its user-profile extractor as currently broken. That is upstream’s own assessment, not a missing toggle in pvdownloader, and no setting on this end changes it. Open the specific post or story instead and paste that.
pvdownloader never asks for Instagram credentials and does not sign in. What you can download is what is publicly reachable. Private accounts, and anything the platform will not play for you, stay out of reach.
Step 3 — Choose a format and download
The engine reports the formats it found. Pick one and start the job. The file is saved as served, with no re-encoding pass over it and no watermark added.
If FFmpeg is needed for that format, that is when the app offers to fetch it.
Why Instagram is thinner than YouTube
YouTube has a long extractor list. Instagram has a handful, and the profile one is flagged broken. That reflects how much of Instagram sits behind a login rather than anything about the platform’s size — and yt-dlp does not sign in.
The practical consequence is to read the table on the Instagram downloader page before pasting something ambitious. Post, story and hashtag URLs are the shapes currently listed. A profile is not, today.
When an extractor breaks, downloads fail until yt-dlp ships a fix. Update the engine; do not wait for a new pvdownloader release. Optional components update independently of the application for exactly that reason.
A note on copyright
pvdownloader is a tool, and it does not decide what you are allowed to do with the result. Downloading a post does not grant you a licence to it.
A few situations where this is worth being careful:
- Your own uploads — no issue, and this is the single best way to keep a copy of work you have published.
- Creative Commons material — check the specific licence, because many CC variants still require attribution.
- Anything else — you need the rights holder’s permission, or a legal exception that applies where you live.
The app does not strip DRM, does not bypass paywalls, and cannot download content that the platform refuses to serve you.
